Pete takes on the Jumper ring!
We took Pepe and Heywood to a local Hunter/Jumper show and entered the Itty Bitty classes (2'3). Upon arrival, Pete was cool as a cucumber on the trailer and was happy to chill with his buddy while we got ourselves situated. He was unphased by the big blue tent we brought which was not surprising, but a nice reminder about this horse's composure.
We ended up waiting around a lot longer than planned, but Pete rolled with it and when it was game time, he was READY. He has never seen jumps like this and when I tell you he impressed the heck out of us, I'm not kidding. He had every reason to question every jump I pointed him at, but instead, he assessed it, trusted his rider (Madeline) and went for it.
We feel extremely lucky to have this horse in our program and look forward to our next outing at the Horse Park of NJ in May!
Pete’s first Horse Trial!
Pete had his first outing at a Schooling Horse Trial this weekend! This was a pretty big step for him and was a lot of atmosphere to take in. The hack over to the dressage and stadium required we go through a tunnel under a bridge and he was a perfect gentleman!
His dressage warmup was great and he really felt like he engaged in his hind end and was using his back nicely. When we got to the dressage ring, he noticed the giant flag poles right behind "A" and got a bit tense, but still didn't put a foot wrong. He handled other horses riding next to him in the warmup and dressage ring very well. Pete was a VERY good boy and we got the test done with a respectable 38.25 score!
Show jumping was a LOT to look at, even for me (Madeline) haha! There were tons of bright colors, spectators, and tents to distract us. Pete pulled one rail and his pilot got him to a few funky distances, but we got it done and overall it was a very positive experience!
The cross country was where Pete absolutely ate it up. This horse is seriously athletic and so responsive to the aids. By this point, Pete and I were much more in tune with each other and confident which led to an awesome experience on the XC. He moved off the leg nicely to have a nice, bold canter around parts of the course. When asked to come back and setup for the next fence, he did just that with no funny business.
Cat and I are so grateful to have this horse in our program. He really is a lovely boy with so much potential. Pete would make an awesome mount for an adult ammy or talented teen in a program looking to bring along their own partner.
Pete goes XC Schooling
Pete had his first XC schooling outing and proved just how game he is. This was his first time on this particular property and he settled in quite nicely. As seen in the video, he was un-phased when his buddy left him to go do some trot sets. He got right to work with a nice, relaxed trot around the field. His first few jumps over the log were a little cautious, but once he realized what he was being asked to do he was eager to do the job. The footage is not the best quality (we are figuring out our new camera) but it paints the picture well enough to see the questions he answered during this outing. We are super excited to take him to his first horse trial!
Pete gets a bath!
Pete’s ground manners have made significant strides since his arrival in January. What a good boy!
Pete’s first horse show!
We took Pete for his first horse show and he showed us just how fantastic he is. He performed USDF Intro Test A & B and scored a respectable 66 and 67! The judge noted on how supple he was and that he had a lovely tempo and rhythm throughout the tests. We were so pleased with how he conducted himself.
In the jumping phase he really stepped up to the plate. This was his first time jumping things with a good bit of filler and he was ready for the challenge! What really impressed us was his responsiveness to the aids and adjustability. Pete proves time and time again that he is incredibly smart. We feel exceptionally lucky to have the opportunity to work with this horse.
Pete’s second off-property ride
We took Pete down the road for an off-property lesson and holy moly was he impressive. He essentially self-loaded himself onto the trailer and then happily accepted carrots and lovin’ from BGE’s tiny boss. He shipped with his friend, Bright, like a dream! Upon arrival, he came off the trailer alert, but not naughty in any way. He takes in everything around him pretty quickly and is happy to get to work when it’s time. We don’t know about you, but we love a horse who’s aware of his surroundings.
This was Pete’s second jump school and first time in an outdoor arena. To set the scene, other horses were riding around, horses turned out in fields next to the ring, a man cutting down branches along the tree line behind the arena, hay bales being thrown down from the hayloft across from the ring, and a dog playing fetch right outside the gate. We say all of that to set the precedent that even with all of those things going on, Pete was still focused on the task at hand! We can’t say it enough, this guy LOVES a job and once he knows and understands the job, he is GAME. We are having a hard time keeping him on the market because we having a lot of fun bringing him along!
Pete’s first post-track ride
Since Pete has arrived at BtG Equine, we have been bombarded with a winter storm. What that meant for Pete was 10 days of minimal turnout and no real work. We quickly observed that he is a guy who loves a job and thoroughly enjoys being challenged. His ground manners have been really good considering the lack of work! When we were finally able to get him under saddle, we were expecting an exuberant display and readied ourselves for some excitement. We were a little dumbfounded when he stood like a gentleman while Catherine mounted and walked off as if he were an old pro.
He was fascinated by his reflection in the indoor mirrors, not scared, but genuinely fascinated! It was a riot to see him slow down to take a peek every time he passed one. His trot is quite possibly one of the most comfortable gaits we’ve ever had the pleasure of riding. Pete immediately went to work and was eager to understand the job. It’s really a pleasure to work with a horse who just loves a JOB. Pete will be very well suited for a home that wants a solid project to move along into pretty much any discipline.
