SOLD

Quimby, barn name “Slick” is a 4 year old, 16.1 hand liver chestnut OTTB by Lord Nelson (Pulpit) out of Roo Roo.

He joined the BGE team on March 11, 2023 and was quick to show us what a curious and adorable guy he is! Slick is a quiet, level headed boy who has been eager and willing to learn his job. He is a bit of push ride on the flat, appreciates consistent contact and loves his job over the fences! Now that he has figured out what his job is, he is GAME.

He has competed through the Beginner Novice level (2’6). His honesty and willingness to please has been apparent each time. Slick would do wonderfully with a rider in an established program to continue to produce him up the levels.

He consistently schools with upper level eventing riders Debbie Adams, Kurt Martin and Sally Cousins. He’s a pleasure to be around with lovely ground manners and a heart melting personality. Our 4 year old Tiny Boss leads him around, rides him, and grooms him and he is so sweet and patient with her. Slick would be an asset to any program and would succeed in Eventing, Jumpers or Hunter rings.

During Slick’s first ride with us, we really focused on making it a calm, cool, and collected experience for him Nothing exciting, just taking time to get to know him and for him to get to know us. He is quite soft in his mouth, but isn’t afraid to reach for the contact which is so nice to have in any horse, but especially a young one! We worked on trot-walk and walk-halt transitions and he seems to pick thing up pretty quickly. He will definitely be a fun one to bring along!

Slick has been taking all of the things we’ve thrown at him in stride (no pun intended). He is really just a level-headed, sweet boy who aims to please. Slick definitely has a bit of a cheeky side, but what young four year old OTTB doesn’t?! Curiosity should be his middle name! He doesn’t have a naughty or mean bone in his body.

We have been having so much fun playing with different exercises under saddle to teach him to be responsive to the leg. He definitely appreciates leg to guide him through what you’re asking of him. Turning is still a work in progress and we’ve been extending the walk and trot to encourage him to really swing through the shoulders and come up under himself from behind. We’re very excited for where this sweet guy is going go to!

Slick took on his first horse show! He was entered in the Starter division, shown in this video. This was his first time seeing jumps with any kind of filler and to be honest we were extremely impressed with how he navigated them. He proved to be curious, but not malicious or overly dramatic.

The goal for this outing was to be drama free and positive for him and that was certainly the case! We didn’t have a “foot perfect” round, but he was so game to do whatever was asked and seemed to thoroughly enjoy his job.

Slick took on his first horse show off property! He was calm, cool, and collected our entire time at the show. I’m really proud of how he came out especially considering how windy it turned out to be during parts of the day.

Our main focus going in the ring was to keep it consistent and not jump out of the ring (he had never seen a dressage ring before this day!) He was such a good boy and even won first place in both divisions!

Cross Country Schooling time for the youngster! Slick came out ready to go and while he did take a look at a few things, he never backed off of them. He is a horse you can put leg on and really ride to the fences. He went right over the banks and ditch without hesitation as well! Enjoy this video!

Slick competed in the Pre-Starter division at the New Jersey Horse Park’s Unrecognized Horse Trial. and WON!! The stadium was quite contained and required him to keep a nice steady pace throughout the course, which he did very well!

This was his second time off property and I can’t say enough good things about this horse and his disposition. Loads the trailer like a pro, ties to the trailer, hangs out with or without other horses,.. he’s an all around solid dude.

We took Slick to the Plantation Field Starter trial and boy did he impress us! The atmosphere at this event is a LOT for any horse to take in, with the dressage on top of a large hill and loads of rolling terrain on the cross country course. He took it all in like an absolute pro. One thing I adore about this horse is how he takes things in and is definitely curious, but doesn’t lose his cool or totally wig out.

He was adjusted by our chiropractor the Tuesday prior to the show and in the days after was definitely stiff on the right side. He came out quite strong and heavy for his dressage test, but suppled nicely as the ride went on.

In the show jumping he had a lovely, balanced canter throughout. The cross country was his time to SHINE. He went out of the start box READY TO GO and took on the questions as if he had done it 100 times before.

This lesson with Kurt was SO GOOD for Slick and Madeline. It was full of tough, technical questions that really had them working on adjustability, straightness, and energy.

This is Slick’s fourth time in a lesson with Kurt and he gets better every time!

Slick headed over to Bit-O-Woods Farm for a jump school with Sally Cousins. This was his second school with her and she was, again, so impressed with how calm, cool, and collected he is.

We worked on balancing in the approach to the jump and really worked to get him comfortable jumping from the base of the jump. He does a really nice job with his shoulders from that distance which we LOVE to see!

We are gearing up for Fair Hill Starter Trial so stay tuned for what’s next!

This sweet boy tried his little heart out in this dressage test. It was really mucky footing, we had a 9 minute warm-up due to some confusion with ring assignments and whatnot, and he STILL came out and put in a solid test walking away as the T.I.P. high point champion in the Starter Division!

I sound like a broken record, but this horse’s brain amazes me daily.

Slick had his Beginner Novice debut at the Horse Park of New Jersey Starter Trials! He walked away with a 31.7 in the dressage which we were THRILLED about.

He felt amazing in the Show Jumping, he pulled a rail at fence one as he was so in awe of the pavilion everyone was sitting in he kind of forgot what he was doing, haha! That said, he kept a beautiful, steady rhythm for the rest of the course.

Cross country was also incredible! He had one stop due to rider error at a maxed out ramp, there just wasn’t enough leg to support him and I must say it was an extremely polite stop. He cruised around the rest of the course with no issues, ending his day in 6th place!
